Public Space Management
The District Department of Transportation has management and oversight responsibility for the use and occupancy of the public space. The goal of Public Space Management is to achieve and maintain safe and beautiful streets. Public Space is defined as all the publicly owned property between the property lines on a street and includes, but is not limited to, the roadway, tree spaces, sidewalks and alleys.
The Public Space Policy Branch is currently tasked with implementation of the Bus Shelter Franchise Agreement. The agreement calls for replacing all existing bus shelters, expanding the number of shelters and adding innovative features, such as bus maps and real-time bus arrival information.

Issue in Spotlight: Intercity Bus Loading & Unloading in Public Space
“The District Department of Transportation announced as of July 3, 2008 that it would suspend the new intercity permit regulations to allow for additional evaluation and review of the program. Originally intended to begin in early July, the regulation seeks to better manage the use of public space and institute curbside management practices through new permitting requirements and by identifying specific locations for passenger drop off and pickup.
The District has been fortunate to see a sudden growth in the number and frequency of these intercity bus operations. While these operations are an important public amenity and a sustainable mode of mass transportation that DDOT heartily supports, they are presently largely unregulated. Further details will be available as DDOT continues to evaluate the new policy.” | |
